This mask is of special interest since it was collected in Tchien, Grand Gedeh County, more than 300 miles from where it originated. The mask was carved in Cape Mount and carried to Tchien during the 1920s by Vai soldiers of the Liberian Frontier Force who were stationed in the area. Together with a companion piece, now badly damaged, it was left behind with a Vai man when the soldiers withdrew after World War II.
